Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)

Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is a  used to improve the design and creation of dental restorations. At BIDH dental clinic, we use CAD/CAM in our areas of specializations.

The basic CAD/CAM systems normally include :

  • digital scanner that captures teeth images and impressions readable by computers
  • computerized software to process and design scanned teeth impressions from digital scans into new prostheses (veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures or customized implant abutments)
  • digital manufacturing mill that takes the cmpleted planned prosthese and makes the actual teeth works

Benefits of having CAD/CAM include :

  • abililty to personal and customized teeth works specifically for your teeth, bite and specifications
  • increase in speed of design and creation
  • less messy and more streamlined without need on use of conventional moulds and alignates, therefore increased comfort
  • higher predictability as restorations and appliances are made based on digital design and ease of communications between patient, dentist and lab technicians

The system can be used chair-side or in the lab. At BIDH, CAD/CAM dental restorations are typically milled from solid blocks of zirconia ceramics that closely match the basic shade of the restored tooth.
