Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)
Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is a used to improve the design and creation of dental restorations. At BIDH bangkok dental clinic, we use CAD/CAM in our areas of specializations.
The basic CAD/CAM systems normally include :
- digital scanner that captures teeth images and impressions readable by computers
- computerized software to process and design scanned teeth impressions from digital scans into new prostheses (veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures or customized implant abutments)
- digital manufacturing mill that takes the cmpleted planned prosthese and makes the actual teeth works
Benefits of having CAD/CAM include :
- abililty to personal and customized teeth works specifically for your teeth, bite and specifications
- increase in speed of design and creation
- less messy and more streamlined without need on use of conventional moulds and alignates, therefore increased comfort
- higher predictability as restorations and appliances are made based on digital design and ease of communications between patient, dentist and lab technicians
The system can be used chair-side or in the lab. At BIDH dental clinic, CAD/CAM dental restorations are typically milled from solid blocks of zirconia ceramics that closely match the basic shade of the restored tooth.
CAD/CAM technologies in dentistry are commonly used within
- Aesthetics Dentistry & Prosthdontics : to design and produce veneers, crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and dentures
- Dental Implantology : this is a new fielld where implantologists uses technology to create surgical templates and customized abutments that is screwed into the dental implant posts. BIDH is the first and one of few dental center in center that has a digital platform for customized implant abutments.
- Orthodontic aligners : an increasing popular orthodontic treatment type is clear aligners; invisalign aligners include digital scan, computerized planned and produced
